Phoenix, AZ, United States (4E Sports) – Rookie Shoni Schimmel scored 29 to lead the East over the West, 125-124 in overtime in the WNBA All-Star game Saturday at US Airways Center.
Schimmel was named the All-Star MVP.
Tina Charles had 19 points, Chiney Ogwumike 15, Tamika Catchings 14 and Angel McCoughtry added 13 for the East.
Candace Dupree and Britney Griner had eight points each as the West held on to a 28-27 lead in the first quarter.
The West opened up the second quarter with a Maya Moore layup and a Skylar Diggins 3-pointer for a 33-27 lead.
Diggins erupted for eight points midway in the second, including another 3-pointer, as the West took a 47-35 advantage.
The East answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Katie Douglas and eight points by Tina Charles in a 22-6 blast to end the half and for a 57-53 lead.
Schimmel hit three 3-pointers within 1:16 early in the third to help the East to a 68-60 lead.
But baskets by Moore triggered a 16-3 run as the West regained advantage at 78-75.
Schimmel then scored seven to lead a 14-0 run by the East for a 110-99 lead with 2:49 left in regulation.
Then Diggins scored eight and Moore added five as the West retaliated with a 13-2 blast to send the game into overtime.
Griner opened the extra period with a layup and Moore’s 3-pointer put the West up 124-117 with 1:59 to play.
But Douglas and Schimmel hit 3-pointers and Catchings had a layup to give the East the upperhand at 125-124.
Then Catchings knocked the ball away from Diggins with two seconds left to seal the victory.
Diggins finished with 27 points and seven assists, Moore scored 24 and Griner had 17 points to lead the West.
