LHU to Offer Associates of Arts Degree in Sustainability

LOCK HAVEN – The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) recently approved a new degree offering for Lock Haven University.

Lock Haven University’s new program, an Associates of Arts (AA) degree in Sustainability Studies, will be offered at both the Clearfield and Lock Haven campuses.

Sustainability has been defined by the United Nations as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Sustainability Studies works to ensure the success of future generations by protecting the environment in a way that does not jeopardize the economic and social needs of the present and future generations.

By offering this degree, LHU is building on the success of their minor in Environment Studies: since its creation in 2010, the minor has been completed by over 30 students.  The courses developed for the Environmental Studies minor will form the core of the AA in Sustainability Studies, along with courses in conservation law, business, social work, economics, and environmental justice.

Approximately 20 percent of Pennsylvania companies employ workers in “green jobs.”  Employment can also be found in government, education, and non-profit organizations.

A few of the potential employment opportunities for graduates could include positions as an environmental education or ecological program specialist, environmental or geologic trainee, oil and gas inspector, forestry worker supervisor, or healthcare sustainability specialist.

The Sustainability Studies AA will also allow for transition into several Bachelor’s degree programs at Lock Haven University including, Recreation Management, Business or Criminal Justice.

An informational session on the new degree will be held at the Clearfield campus on July 24 at 4:30 p.m.  To register, please visit here.
