Buenos Aires, Argentina (4E Sports) – Argentina’s Lionel Messi wanted to go home with the World Cup rather than being the best player of the tournament, after winning the Golden Ball award.

“The Golden Ball means very little to me at this moment. It is great pain,” Messi stated.

According to ESPN, Messi believes the team played for something big and wanted to make their nation happy.

Messi stated that he lived moments of great sadness with the team and the finals match against Germany is a chance to change that.

Instead Mario Gotze scored a goal in the additional minutes of the game to capture the victory, 1-0.

It is not all negative for Messi as he stated, “It is a pity not to go home with the Cup, but we go home with our heads high. We can return calm from this World Cup.”

Messi, who scored five goals in the tournament, believes they played against a great team but deserves better than a runner-up finish.

“I only wanted to raise the World Cup and raise it for Argentina. We deserved more. If we had scored a goal it would have changed the match,” Messi added.

This is still considered a successful finish for Argentina making it to the semi-finals since 1990.
