Las Vegas, NV, United States (4E Sports) – Canelo Alvarez proved to be more aggressive than Erislandy Lara, grabbing a split-decision win over the Cuban contender Saturday night in a junior middleweight bout at the MGM Grand.
Judges Dave Moretti (115-113) and Levi Martinez (117-111) scored the fight in favor of Alvarez, while Judge Jerry Roth scored it 115-113, Lara.
According to Alvarez, he came in to fight and not to run. “You don’t win by running. You win by hitting,” he stated through a translator.
This is the Mexican’s second straight win after his defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.
Alvarez kept on attacking, landing heavier blows and cutting off corners to stop the Cuban’s elusiveness.
After the decision, Lara argued with the result believing he had done enought to notch the win.
“I think 100 percent I won the fight,” Lara said through a translator.
Lara thought he was in control arguing Alvarez did nothing significant to land a split-decision victory.
Lara’s trainer Ronnie Shields expressed his dismay saying they got robbed.
The non-title bout win makes Alvarez the no. 1 junior middleweight in the world after Mayweather and Miguel Cotto left the division.
