Ivo Karlovic punches ticket to Hall of Fame finals

Newport, RI, United States (4E Sports) – Second seed Ivo Karlovic barged into the final of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sam Groth Saturday.

The 6-11 Karlovic will go for his first title this year against the winner of the other semifinal pairing between Lleyton Hewitt and Jack Sock.

Meanwhile, third seed Roberto Bautista Agut and world No. 48 Lukas Rosol will play for the MercedesCup trophy after beating their respective semifinal rival.

Bautista Agut knocked out top seed and defending champion Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-4, in 74 minutes while world Rosol overcame second seed Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6(3), 6-2.

“I had to play one of my best matches to beat Fognini here today,” said Bautista Agut. “We both played really well in the second set. It was tough to close out the match but I concentrated and served well.”

Pablo Cuevas earned his first ATP World Tour final berth with a 7-6(6), 6-3 upset win over third seed Fernando Verdasco at the SkiStar Swedish Open.

Standing in Cuevas’ quest for his maiden tour-level crown is Joao Sousa, who ousted defending champion Carlos Berlocq, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

On the women’s side, fourth seed Andrea Petkovic and Shelby Rogers will play for the title at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies tennis tournament.

Petkovic, who won the title here in 2009, defeated Grace Min, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, while Rogers stunned second seed Sara Errani, 7-6 (14-12), 6-3.

In Romania, top seed Simona Halep reached the final of the Bucharest Open with a a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Monica Niculescu.

For the title, Halep will face Roberta Vinci, who easily defeated Kristina Kucova, 6-1, 6-3 for her first finals berth this year.
