Milwaukee, WI, United States (4E Sports) – The Milwaukee Brewers have placed shortstop Jean Segura on the bereavement list following the death of his 9-month-old son.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Segura has left the team and returned to his native Dominican Republic after learning about his son’s death following Friday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
“Obviously it’s tough on him,” Roenicke said. “He didn’t learn about it until after the game was over and one of the players came over and told him.”
The Brewers released a statement on their official Twitter account Saturday afternoon, saying that the organization extends “our deepest condolences to Jean Segura and his family.”
Roenicke did not disclose specific details about the boy’s death and did not know when Segura would rejoin the team.
“I didn’t know what to say to him other than give him a hug, tell him we’re here for him,” Roenicke said. “He had a tough time. All the guys came by.”
The Brewers recalled infielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville Saturday to replace Segura on the active roster.
