A’s Jeff Samardzija limits Jays to 4 hits in 7 innings for win

Oakland, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Jeff Samardzija struck out five while allowing only four hits over seven innings to lead the Oakland Athletics past the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-2 Sunday at O.co Coliseum.

It was the Athletics debut for the ex-Chicago Cub Samardzija (1-0), who gave up one run and walked one.

Jed Lowrie had two hits and scored twice, and leadoff hitter John Jaso added a pair of hits and an RBI while Stephen Vogt singled and tripled for the A’s.

Lowrie led off with a double in the second with Craig Gentry adding an infield hit to bring him home and put the A’s ahead, 1-0.

Singles by Nate Freiman and Jaso in the fourth pushed the A’s lead to 3-0.

The Jays cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth as Melky Cabrera’s groundout plated Jose Reyes.

But the A’s pushed their lead to it 4-1 in the eight with Derek Norris’ RBI double.

Steve Tolleson homered off A’s closer Sean Doolittle in the ninth to make it 4-2.

Jays starter Drew Hutchison (6-7) struck out four and walked two.
