Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Corey Kluber pitched 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball while Yan Gomes hit a two-run shot as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals in the rubbermatch of a three-game series Sunday at Progressive Field.
Kluber (8-6) allowed four hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts as the Indians improved to 43-44 after winning four of their last five games and their last two three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Royals.
Cody Allen got the last two outs in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.
Carlos Santana added a long ball and Gomes capped the Indians’ three-run second frame with a two-run shot.
Michael Brantley had two hits for his fourth multi-hit effort in five games and added an RBI single in the fifth for Cleveland. He raised his average by nine points in just three days and finished the series with seven hits and three RBIs.
Danny Duffy (5-8) absorbed the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits with no walk and six strikeouts as the Royals slipped to 45-42 after losing three of their last five games.
The Indians struck first with a pair of homers from Santana’s 13th of the year and Gomes’ two-run shot for a 3-0 lead.
Kluber was nearly flawless over the first four frames as he allowed just one hit and zero walks while fanning six. His only blemish came in the fifth frame, when Mike Moustakas went deep on a hanging slider and cut the lead to two runs.
Brantley provided some insurance in the Indians’ half of the fifth inning on a single that brought Jason Kipnis home from second to make it 4-1.
Cleveland outfielder Tyler Holt made his Major League debut in the ninth inning as he replaced Ryan Raburn in right field.
Kluber gave up a leadoff double to Eric Hosmer in the ninth and was lifted with one out. Allen came on to record the final two outs for the save.
