Kansas City, KS, United States (4E Sports) – Mike Magee scored in the 40th minute as the Chicago Fire settled for a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City in Sunday’s MLS action at Sporting Park.

Dominic Dwyer opened the scoring in the 33rd minute for Sporting, which received a boost with the return of national players Graham Zusi and Matt Besler from the World Cup.

Seven minutes later, Magee hit the equalizer to help the Fire (2-4-10) earn a point and improve to 16 points from 16 matches, good for ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

However, Chicago’s winless streak in league play reached six matches and the club has not won since May 18.

The stalemate helped Sporting (7-5-5) improve to 26 points, two points behind D.C. United for the Eastern Conference lead.

Dwyer struck in the 33rd minute as he caught Chicago defender Patrick Ianni in possession and easily slid it past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to the near post for his 12th goal of the season.

However, Dwyer was shown a yellow card by referee Alan Kelly for excessive celebration after he took a selfie with Soony Saad and a few happy Sporting fans.

The Fire tied the game in the 40th minute when Alex slid a cutting ball to Magee on the left side of the box before the former MVP ripped it past Sporting goalkeeper Eric Kronberg for his fifth goal of the season.

Sporting had a chance to pick up three points in second-half stoppage time when Johnson failed to immediately control Jacob Peterson’s low shot. Substitute C.J. Sapong chased the ball but Johnson was able to recover it just in time.
