Wimbledon, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Defending champion Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the seventh year in a row with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Kevin Anderson Monday.
The third-seeded Murray, who has yet to drop a set in four matches at The Championships, raced to a 6-4, 3-0 double break lead before the rain interruption.
At the resumption, Anderson came out more aggressive and made life difficult for Murray, who was forced to save a set point in the tie-break before sealing victory in two hours and 32 minutes.
Murray will next play 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Meanwhile, Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka defeated Denis Istomin, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round.
The fifth-seeded Swiss hit 12 aces among his 33 winners and broke Istomin’s serve four times en route to victory. The match had been scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed because of rain.
In the round of 16, Wawrinka will next tackle Feliciano Lopez, who defeated John Isner, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
Marin Cilic became the first man to reach the quarterfinals after beating Jeremy Chardy, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, 6-4. The 26th seed Cilic now awaits the winner of the Novak Djokovic-Jo-Wilfried Tsonga showdown.
Kei Nishikori completed a five-set victory over Simone Bolelli, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, to set a fourth-round match with eighth seed Milos Raonic.
On the women’s side, former champion Petra Kvitova booked a quarterfinal spot after with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Peng Shuai.
Kvitova, who reached the round of eight for the fifth year in a row, will next face fellow Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who defeated Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 7-5.
Meanwhile, 13th seed Eugenie Bouchard reached her third Grand Slam quarterfinal this year by ousting Alize Cornet, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Other winners were Lucie Safarova, Sabine Lisicki and Yaroslava Shvedova.
