Tulsa, OK, United States (4E Sports) – Brittney Griner posted a single game record of 11 blocks and scored 21 points to lead the Phoenix Mercury over Tulsa Shock, 80-77 Sunday at BOK Center.
Penny Taylor had 17 points while hitting 10 for 10 on free throws while Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner chipped in 14 and Candace Dupree scored 11 for the Mercury.
Roneeka Hodges hit two 3-pointers in scoring eight as the Shock took an 18-17 lead in the first quarter while Bonner topscored with six for Mercury .
Then the Shock used a 10-0 run to take a 32-22 lead at 3:57 of the second.
Taurasi scored five in Mercury ‘s 9-0 blast to tie the game at 50 at 3:15 of the third.
The teams were tied at 60 entering the fourth before Griner scored the Mercury’s first eight points of the fourth as they overtook the Shock 68-66 midway in the quarter.
Bonner and Dupree each had baskets to boost their lead to 72-66 but free throws by Odyssey Sims and Skylar Diggins cut the Shock’s deficit to 78-77 with nine seconds left.
However, a loose ball foul on Penny Taylor led to two free throws that secured the win for Mercury.
Diggins, Sims and Glory Johnson scored 16 points apiece to lead the Shock (6-9).
