Alize Cornet ousts top seed Serena Williams at Wimbledon

Wimbledon, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Alize Cornet recorded the biggest upset at Wimbledon as she stunned five-time champion and top seed Serena Williams, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, in Saturday’s third round.

With the win, the 25th seed Cornet matched a personal-best at a Grand Slam by advancing to the round of 16. She also reached the fourth round at the 2009 Australian Open.

The win was the second straight for Cornet over Williams, but her first in 14 career matches against Top 20 opponents at a Grand Slam.

Williams comfortably captured the first set following a lengthy rain delay but Cornet stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the second and closed it out with a forehand winner.

Cornet converted a fourth break point in the fifth game to go up 3-2. She broke Williams again to clinch a 5-2 lead before forcing the No. 1 seed to net a backhand on match point.

Cornet will next play Eugenie Bouchard, who defeated 20th seed Andrea Petkovic, 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova advanced to the fourth round via a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alison Riske. She will next take on Angelique Kerber, a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner over Kirsten Flipkens.

Third seed Simona Halep also reached the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Belinda Bencic. She will next face Zarina Diyas, who beat Vera Zvonareva, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3.

On the men’s side, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal reached the fourth round with a 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mikhail Kukushkin.

After losing a close first set, Nadal finall found his range and dictated the remainder of the match, wrapping up victory in two hours and 34 minutes, having committed just 11 unforced errors.

Nadal will next square off with Aussie young gun Nick Kyrgios, who ousted fellow rising star Jiri Vesely 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in a rain-delayed duel.

Roger Federer wasted no time in booking his fourth-round spot as he blasted past Santiago Giraldo, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in 81 minutes. For a place in the quarterfinals, Federer will face either 2013 semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz or Tommy Robredo.

Milos Raonic clinched a fourth-round spot after beating Lukasz Kubot 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 6-2. He aonic will look to reach his second Grand Slam quarterfinal when he faces either Kei Nishikori or Simone Bolelli.
