Manaus, Brazil (4E Sports) – Cristiano Ronaldo and Silvestre Varela combined for a late goal to force a 2-2 draw for Portugal against the United States, Sunday at Arena Amazônia.
Portugal went ahead just five minutes into the game after a shaky defense by Geoff Cameron allowed the ball to get to Nani who blasted a wide open shot past Tim Howard.
The Americans gave a strong showing the rest of the half but couldn’t find the net.
Portugal regained control of the match in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and had US defenders under steady pressure.
In the 64th minute a cleared corner kick fell right to Jermaine Jones who got around Nani before unleashing a shot inside the far post to even the game.
Then a Graham Zusi pass to Clint Dempsey was converted with a chest shot towards the net to put the United States up 2-1 in the 81st minute.
With less than 30 seconds left, Ronaldo sent a cross to Varela, who blasted a header into the goal for a 2-2 draw.
