Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Miguel Cabrera belted his 13th homer and knocked in three runs as the Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians via a 10-4 triumph Sunday at Progressive Field.
J.D. Martinez added a two-run double while Nick Castellanos drove in two runs as the Tigers (40-32) extended their winning streak to four games, heading to Texas with no worse than a 1 1/2-game lead atop the AL Central.
Max Scherzer (9-3) grabbed the victory after allowing just one run on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings. He was hit by a line drive in the leg but shrugged it off and finished out his sixth and final inning.
Josh Tomlin (4-5) took the loss after surrendering eight runs – five earned – on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts as the Indians fell to 37-39 after losing four of their last five games.
Cabrera put Detroit ahead a line drive that cleared the fence in right-center field in the first inning and hit a run-scoring ground ball in the third for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Cabrera’s ground ball earned him another RB, helping the Tigers to pull away.
Asdrubal Cabrera’s drop on a forceout at second meant nobody was out and Victor Martinez’s line drive to center loaded the bases for the Tigers.
Martinez and Castellanos cleared the bases with back-to-back two-run doubles to the center-field fence. Andrew Romine and Kinsler added RBI singles for a 9-0 lead.
In the sixth, Alex Avila sent a two-out double over Michael Bourn’s head to score Castellanos in the seventh to give the Tigers a double-digit on the road for the first time since May 21.
