WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – A Mayport man was killed in a two-vehicle collision that occurred around 4:52 p.m. Friday on Interstate 80 in Washington Township, Jefferson County, reported the state police at DuBois.
According to state police, Justin L. Shreckengost, 30, of Mayport and Ronald S. Harper, 29, of Griffin, Ga. were involved in the collision. Shreckengost was traveling westbound in the left-hand lane at the 90.2 mile-marker in a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze.
Harper was also traveling westbound on I-80 in the right-hand lane ahead of Shreckengost in a 2013 Freightliner Conventional tractor-trailer, according to state police. Shreckengost approached some slower moving traffic, and he passed them in the right-hand lane.
Shreckengost failed to observe the Freightliner in the right-hand lane. The driver’s side of his vehicle struck the rear of the flatbed trailer on the Freightliner, state police said.
The Chevrolet Cruze traveled approximately 8.5 feet under the Freightliner’s trailer. Both vehicles came to a rest in the right-hand lane of I-80 approximately 75 feet west of the point of impact. The Chevrolet then caught on fire.
Harper and several passersby attempted to put the fire out with fire extinguishers. They also pulled Shreckengost out of his vehicle, according to state police.
Shreckengost was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. Harper was using a seatbelt and was not injured.
I-80 westbound was closed for approximately three hours. The Falls Creek Volunteer Fire Department and PennDOT assisted at the scene.
