Kansas City, MO, United States (4E Sports) – Dustin Ackley delivered the go-ahead RBI in the ninth to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals Saturday at Kauffman Stadium.
With two outs in the ninth, Kyle Seager doubled against Jason Vargas before Stefen Romero reached second on a line drive that bounced away from second baseman Pedro Ciriaco.
Seager then scored on Ackley’s single to right as the Mariners improved to 39-36 after taking the first two games of the three-game set.
Chris Young pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
However, it was Yoervis Medina (4-1) who got the win after pitching a scoreless eighth. Fernando Rodney closed out the win for his 20th save of the season.
Vargas (7-3) absorbed the loss despite a solid outing. He gave up two runs on 10 hits with no walk and two strikeouts in 8 2/3 frames, the longest by a Royals pitcher this season.
The Royals dropped to 39-35 with their third straight loss, which came after a 10-game winning streak.
Seattle struck first when Cole Gillespie punched a third-inning RBI single to center but Alex Gordon responded with his ninth homer of the year in the fifth.
The Mariners go for a sweep Sunday with Roenis Elias (6-5) on the mound against Yordano Ventura (5-5).
