Raleigh, NC, United States (NewsBahn) – The Carolina Hurricanes ended a 45-day search for a new head coach, hiring Detroit Red Wings assistant Bill Peters to the post.

Peters takes over for Kirk Muller in an attempt to get the ‘Canes back to the playoffs after a five year absence.

“I’m looking forward to getting started,” Peters said. “I’m going in with an open mind but I have a lot of ideas about how we can become better and we will be.”

Peters is the Canes’ fourth different coach since the franchise relocated from Hartford to North Carolina in 1997. He is the third mentor in the past five seasons as the team looks to return to its Stanley Cup winning form of 2006.

Peters has minor league head coaching experience but none in the NHL.
