S-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands (4E Sports) – Michaella Krajicek scored two victories in the opening round of the Topshelf Open.
After defeating Jana Cepelova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, Krajicek was surprised when her boyfriend, ATP World Tour campaigner Martin Emmrich, proposed on the court. Krajicker then said “yes”.
“It was a huge surprise,” said Krajicek. “We spoke about marriage a couple of times before, but I didn’t expect it now. It’s very special.”
“I’m really happy and I feel so lucky that he did it like this. We met here one year ago and I think it’s such a very special place to do it,” she added.
In other matches, sixth seed Kirsten Flipkens ousted Polana Hercog, 6-4, 6-0; Garbine Muguruza cruised past Lesley Kerkhove, 6-4, 6-2; while Klara Koukalova defeated Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-2.
Other winners were Coco Vandeweghe, Mona Barthel, Annika Beck and Elina Svitolina.
On the men’s side of the event, sixth seed Vasek Pospisil defeated Dusan Lajovic, 6-4, 7-5, in a rain-delayed contest.
The Canadian won 72 percent of his service points and broke Lajovic twice, including in the 11th game of the second set immediately after the rain delay, to prevail in 86 minutes.
Fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov needed 77 minutes to beat Bradley Klahn 6-3, 7-6(3) and advance against wild card Thiemo de Bakker, who won an all-Dutch clash with Igor Sijsling, 6-4, 7-6(4).
In other matches, world No. 68 Steve Johnson beat Kenny De Schepper, 7-6(3), 7-5, while qualifier Lukas Lacko defeated Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, world No. 43 Jeremy Chardy upset two-time former champion and fifth seed Ivo Karlovic, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the Aegon International.
Chardy lost just nine of his service points and withstood 14 aces to break Karlovic twice in their first meeting.
Karlovic wasn’t the only seed to fall on Day 1 as Martin Klizan beat eighth seed Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-4 in 70 minutes.
Third seed Feliciano Lopez will open his title defense against Tobias Kamke, who defeated wild card Daniel Evans, 6-2, 6-3 in 66 minutes.
Top seed Richard Gasquet will face Bernard Tomic in the second round after the Australian dismissed Andrey Golubev, 6-4, 6-4, in 68 minutes.
Last year’s runner-up Gilles Simon fired 15 aces as he edged Chris Guccione 7-6(2), 6-4 in 66 minutes.
On the women’s side, Agnieszka Radwanska was eliminated in the first round by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Other winners were Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki, Alize Cornet, Sloane Stephens and Elena Vesnina.
