Fortaleza, Brazil (4E Sports) – Costa Rica scored three goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 upset victory over favorite Uruguay in Group D of the World Cup Saturday at Estadio Castelao.
Edinson Cavani put Uruguay, a strong pre-tournament favorite despite the injury to Luis Suarez, ahead in the 24th minute with a penalty kick.
However, Costa Rica recovered in the second half with goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena to take the win pulling away.
With the victory, Costa Rica grabbed the early lead in Group D with three points. The other group members – Italy and England – will play each other later in the day.
Uruguay’s star striker Suarez is still recovering from a knee injury and was unable to take the field for the two-time champion. An injury-time red card for Maxi Pereira only served to compound misery for Uruguay.
Meanwhile, Colombia made a promising start to its World Cup campaign with a 3-0 win over Greece at Estadio Mineirao.
Pablo Armero helped the Colombians jump out in front with a goal in the sixth minute while goals from Teo Gutierrez in the 58th minute and James Rodriguez in the third minute of stoppage time sealed all three points.
The result gave Colombia the early lead in Group C while putting Greece in a slight hole.
Jose Pekerman’s men will take on Ivory Coast Thursday at the Estadio Nacional while Fernando Santos’ men will try to bounce back against Japan Thursday.
