Jason Vargas’ strong pitching plus Royals’ hot batting topple Indians

Kansas City, MO, United States (4E Sports) – Jason Vargas carried a shutout into the eighth as his Kansas City Royals teammates hit three home runs to beat the Cleveland Indians, 9-5 Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium

The Royals had a four-run third inning with Omar Infante’s single, Eric Hosmer’s RBI groundout, and Billy Butler’s two-run RBI.

Hosmer then hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Royals a 6-0 advantage.

In the eight, Jason Kipnis ripped a two-run double against Vargas to make it 6-3.

The left-handed Vargas was then replaced by Tim Collins, whose first pitch was smacked by Carlos Santana to an RBI single that cut the Indians deficit to 6-3.

But Alex Gordon had a one-run homer followed by Mike Moustakas’ two-run homer to push the Royals lead to 9-3.

In the ninth, Asdrubal Cabrera and David Murphy each drove in a run against Aaron Crow for the final score.

The Indians’ Corey Kluber (6-4) allowed six runs, with three earned, and six hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked two.
