Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – The Cleveland Cavaliers will meet with 7-foot, 250-pound Kansas center Joel Embiid Thursday in preparation for the June 26 NBA draft.
Owning the number one overall pick, the Cavs want a clear picture on Embiid’s stress fracture in the back and will conduct medical testing, work uts and interviews.
If the 20-year-old Embiid is medically sound, league sources say the Cavs will go for him.
Otherwise, the Cavs are expected to select either Duke’s Jabari Parker or Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins, both forwards.
Aside from Embiid’s enormous talent, the Cavs have a positional need to get a center.
The 6-11 Anderson Varejao, their starting center, will be 32 years old and is on the final year of his contract, while 7-1 Spencer Hawes will be an unrestricted free agent in July.
Embiid, a Cameroon native, said he wouldn’t work out for No. 2 Milwaukee or No. 3 Philadelphia until he meets with the Cavs and gets a clearer picture of their plans.
He is the 2014 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 28 games for the Jayhawks this season.
