London, United Kingdom (4E) – UK industrial output expanded at its fastest annual rate for three years in April, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Output climbed by 3 percent in April from the previous year, according to ONS figures, the fastest annual pace since January 2011.
The narrower gauge of manufacturing output jumped 4.4 percent from a year ago, the fastest performance since February 2011.
Tuesday’s results showed the sector continues to have “robust growth”, analysts said. In April alone, both industrial output and manufacturing output gained 0.4 percent, according to the ONS.
Manufacturing output was helped by electronic products, transport equipment and rubber and plastics. Transport equipment manufacturing, which covers vehicles and trailers, contributed heavily to the April increase.
The readings of manufacturing output and industrial output were respectively 7.0 percent and 11.3 percent below the pre-crisis GDP peak of the first quarter of 2008, according to the ONS.
