Defoe’s penalty bails out Toronto FC over Earthquakes

Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – Jermain Defoe scored from the penalty spot as Toronto FC defeated the San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0 Saturday at BMO Field.

Toronto started relentlessly that led to a pair of corners and a free kick.

In the 25th minute, Nick Hagglund was pushed down in the box by Alan Gordon. Defoe stepped up to the spot, placed a shot into the left hand side and beat San Jose ‘keeper Jon Busch , who dove the other way.

The Earthquakes turned the intensity at the start of the second half.

TFC ‘keeper Joe Bendik nearly conceded a goal with 20 minutes to play after spilling a floating effort but the ball was cleared.

The Earthquakes also came close on a couple of occasions in the last 10 minutes.

It was Toronto’s third straight home victory and sixth regular season victory, earning a valuable three points ahead of the World Cup break.
