Eight states hold primary elections

Des Moines, IA, United States (4E) – Primary elections are on in Mississippi, Iowa, California, New Jersey, South Dakota, Montana, Alabama and New Mexico on Tuesday.

In Iowa, state Sen. Joni Ernst (R) is vying for the GOP Senate nomination against businessman Mark Jacobs (R). Ernst, an Iraq War veteran, is favored to win to face Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) in November. Iowa voters will also pick the successors of Braley and retired Rep. Tom Latham’s (R-Iowa).

In California, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar (D), backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and attorney Eloise Gomez Reyes (D) are vying for the seat of retiring Rep. Gary Miller’s (R-Calif.). Former Treasury Department official Neel Kashkari (R) and Tim Donnelly (R) are contesting the GOP nomination to face California Gov. Jerry Brown (D). Rep. Doug Ose (R-Calif.) is going up against conservative former Hill staffer Igor Birman (R) or fringe candidate Elizabeth Emken (R) for the chance to face Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.).

Voters will also choose the replacement for retiring Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), George Miller (D-Calif.), Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Calif.), Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) and John Campbell (R-Calif.).

In New Jersey, the Republican primary for the state’s third district pits former Randolph Mayor Tom MacArthur against Tea Party favorite Steve Lonegan, The winner will assume the seat of retiring Rep. Jon Runyan’s (R). In the Democratic primary.

In Montana, Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) and Rep. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) are likely to win nominations from their parties and vie for former Sen. Max Baucus’ (D) seat.

In South Dakota, former Gov. Mike Rounds is expected to win the Republican primary and take over the seat of retiring Sen. Tim Johnson (D). He is running against physician Annette Bosworth, lawyer Jason Ravnsborg, state Sen. Stace Nelson and Larry Rhoden.

In Alabama, the Republican primary for the 6th District seat left open by Rep. Spencer Bachus’ (R-Ala.) retirement.

In New Mexico, five Democratic contenders will face Gov. Susana Martinez.
