Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – Hoping to ignite their offense, the Kansas City Royals have promoted third base coach Dale Sveum as new hitting coach, according to sources.

Sveum, the former Chicago Cubs manager, ran a session of early batting practice before Thursday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Sveum will be replaced on the field by longtime minor-league manager Mike Jirschele. Pedro Grifol, the former hitting coach, has been reassigned.

At 24-28, the team’s offense has been a widespread disappointment. Heading into Thursday’s games, the team ranks last in the American League in runs (197), last in home runs (21) and last in on-base plus slugging percentage (.654).

Sveum served as hitting instructor in Milwaukee from 2009-2011 under Ken Macha. The Brewers were top five in runs scored every year, and top three in home runs hit.
