Kufstein, Austria (4E Sports) – Midfielder Oscar Moreno and Roque Santa Cruz scored in each half as Paraguay defeated Cameroon, 2-1, in Thursday’s pre-World Cup friendly at Kufstein Arena.
Romero put his team ahead in the fourth minute while Santa Cruz added a second in the 68th minute as Paraguay earned only its second win in last 10 matches.
Paraguay made it to the quarterfinal at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but failed to qualify for this year’s tournament.
Cameroon, which got a goal from Maxim Choupo-Moting in the 75th minute, played without some key players, including Pierre Webo,
Pierre Webo hurt his left shoulder as he landed after an acrobatic bicycle kick that earned Cameroon the opening goal in its 2-0 win over Macedonia Monday.
Cameroon dominated possession but
Romero put Paraguay in front when he converted a low cross by Ramon Coronel.
Just seconds after coming on for Romero, substitute David Mendieta had a goal disallowed for offside when he rounded off a smooth Paraguay counterattack in the 66th minute.
Santa Cruz doubled the lead two minutes later with a subtle touch past Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Itandje off a Junior Alonso pass.
Choupo-Moting brought Cameroon back into the game but striker Mohammadou Idrissou missed a chance to tie the game when his penalty was saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Roberto Junior Fernandez in the 87th minute.
Cameroon resumes its buildup against Germany in Moenchengladbach Sunday. The Cameroonians are in Group A with Mexico, Croatia and host Brazil. Paraguay will take on France in Nice the same day.
In other matches, Arvydas Novikovas scored in the 41st minute to carry Lithuania to a 1-0 win over Finland while Latvia and Estonia settled for a scoreless draw.
