Paris, France (4E Sports) – There will be no Sister Act in the third round of the French Open as the Williams sisters were ousted by young opponents.
Top seed Serena Williams was stunned by Garbiñe Muguruza, 6-2, 6-2, in just 64 minutes while Venus fell in three sets to Anna Schmiedlova, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
This marked the first time in the Open Era that both of a Grand Slam’s top two seeds have failed to reach the third round. Second seed and 2011 champion Li Na was knocked out Tuesday.
“It was one of those days,” Williams said. “You know, you can’t be on every day. I hate to be off during a Grand Slam, but it happens. It’s not the end of the world. It is what it is.”
Two years ago, Serena was bounced in the first round two years ago by Virginie Razzano but he rebounded last year en route to her second French title — dropping just one set in seven matches.
Meanwhile, third seed Agnieszka Radwanska cruised past Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 6-4, while Sharapova defeated Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-5, 6-2. Eighth seed Angelique Kerber edged Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 7-5, while ninth seed Dominika Cibulkova squeezed past Tamira Paszek, 6-3, 6-4.
Other winners were Taylor Townsend, Carla Suarez Navarro, Johanna Larsson, Mona Barthel, Eugenie Bouchard, Sam Stosur, Daniela Hantuchova and Ajla Tomljanovic.
On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer reached the third round of the event with straight-set victories.
Djokovic beat Jeremy Chardy, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, while Federer improved to 13-0 in second-round matches by defeating Diego Sebastian Schwartzman, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Up next for Djokovic will be Marin Cilic, who downed Tobias Kamke, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Federer will tackle Dmitry Tursunov, a 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Sam Querrey.
Other winners were Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic, John Isner, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Radek Stepanek, Tommy Robredo, Ernests Gulbis, Marcel Granollers, Jerzy Janowicz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Gilles Simon, Martin Klizan and Steve Johnson.
