Boston, MA, United States (4E Sports) – Jared Remy, son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, has pleaded guilty to killing his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Martel last August at their home in Waltham.

The 34-year-old Remy was earlier charged with first-degree murder and related assault charges. With his admission, a sentence of life without parole will be automatic.

“If you ask my family, they’d rather have me dead than her,” Jared Remy said in court this morning. “Jen was an angel and always will be an angel.”

The stabbing was witnessed by a neighbor and took place while the couple’s 5-year-old daughter was in the home. The plea spared the girl from possibly having to testify against her father.

A former security guard for the Red Sox, Remy had a long history of arrests for domestic assaults of a string of girlfriends. He had been scheduled to go on trial Oct. 7 in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.

In addition to murder, he pleaded guilty to assault and battery with a knife, assault and violation of a restraining order.

According to prosecutors, Martel was beaten and stabbed in the head, neck, torso, arms and legs. Cops found her with a tank top wrapped around her head.

“Jennifer discussed with friends and relatives the possibility of ending the relationship” before her death, Prosecutor Lisa McGovern told the court.

Minutes before her murder, Martel changed her status on Facebook to “in a complicated relationship,” McGovern said.

Jerry Remy took yesterday and today off from the Red Sox NESN broadcast booth. Remy and his wife, who did not attend this morning’s plea, have visitation rights with the little girl.
