Phoenix, AZ, United States (4E Sports) – Danielle Robinson had 14 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead the San Antonio Stars in edging the Phoenix Mercury, 78-74 Friday night at US Airways Center.
Jia Perkins added 13 points in the win. Erin Phillips had a jumper and a 3-pointer to ignite a 10-2 Mercury run for a 58-53 lead.
But Shenice Johnson answered with a layup and a 3-pointer to lead a 7-1 burst for to give the Stars (2-1) a 60-59 advantage going into the final period.
The Stars (2-1) stared the fourth on a 13-4 run to take a 73-63 lead with 5:28 remaining.
DeWanna Bonner hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to spark a Mercury comeback to close in at 76-74 with 1:05 left.
Free throws by Jayne Appel with 5.3 seconds secured the win for the Stars.
Diana Taurasi led the Mercury (2-1) with 21 points, hitting 8 of 14 from the field, while dishing out nine assists. Brittney Griner had 12 points and nine rebounds while Bonner added 15 points.
