New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan will have surgery Friday for a broken jaw suffered from a hit by Montreal Canadiens’ Brandon Prust in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

His status for Game 4 Sunday and the remainder of the series is unknown.

Stepan left the game after the hit, while his former teammate Prust was suspended two games by the NHL.

The Rangers center underwent X-rays that came back negative and subsequently cleared to play, returning to the game later in the first period.

But when the Rangers sent Stepan to a specialist Friday morning, a more detailed scan revealed the fracture.

Prust’s teammate, David Desharnais, said the hit changed the complexion of the game firing up the Canadiens bench for a 3-2 win.
