Female bicycle rider stuck, killed in Detroit area

Detroit, MI, United States (NewsBahn) – A Lenox Township woman, 25, was struck and killed late Thursday after working the evening shift at a New Haven Subway sandwich shop.

A 1990 Geo Tracker driven by a 30-year-old Richmond Township man reportedly hit Melanie Jenae-Laura James as she pedaled on Gratiot south of 27 Mile Road.

Police then had to conduct a three-hour search for the driver as he hid following the incident, according to the sherriff’s department.

“It’s a tragedy. Here’s a young lady working and trying to do what she can to provide for herself, just riding home and minding her own business and she’s struck by a vehicle,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said according to freep.com.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the incident, he added and the driver is in police custordy awaiting charges.
