Federico Delbonis ousts John Isner in France

Nice, France (4E Sports) – Seventh seed Federico Delbonis defeated top seed John Isner, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6), Thursday for a place in the semifinal of the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur.

Isner fought off two match points down 4-6 in the tie-break before Delbonis pulled through for the victory after two hours and 12 minutes.

The 23-year-old Delbonis will look to reach his third clay-court final Friday when he plays fourth seed Gilles Simon, who defeated Carlos Berlocq, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to his first semifinal of the season.

Second seed Ernests Gulbis prevailed over fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5), to advance against defending champion Albert Montanes, who beat Leonardo Mayer, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Czech youngster Jiri Vesely spoiled the 33rd birthday of Jurgen Melzer with a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win Thursday to reach his first ATP World Tour semifinal at the Düsseldorf Open.

The 20-year-old Vesely will next face Ivo Karlovic, who hit 19 aces en route to an 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 upset win over defending champion Juan Monaco,.

Denis Istomin recorded his 150th match win as he beat No. 3 seed Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes.

Istomin awaits the winner between top-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber and Croatian qualifier Mate Delic. Kohlschreiber led 7-5, 4-4 when the match was suspended due to darkness.

On the women’s side, Karolina Pliskova dismissed top seed Angelique Kerber, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, in the quarterfinal round of the Nurnberger Cup. Pliskova advanced to the semifinal against Elina Svitolina, who topped Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-4.

Karin Knapp defeated seventh seed Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, 6-4, to arrange a semifinal clash with second seed Eugenie Bouchard, a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6) winner over Yaroslava Shvedova.

In Strasbourg, France, promising Monica Puig shocked Andrea Petkovic, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinal round of the Strasbourg International.

Puig will next play Madison Keys, who eliminated Julia Goerges, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Christina McHale was leading Zarina Diyas 6-2, 3-1 when the latter retired with an injury. McHale will next face Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who defeated Camila Giorgi, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
