Brooklyn, NY, United States (4E) – Two fourth grade students were arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal possession of a weapon (the rat pellets), reckless endangerment and attempted assault for trying to poison their teacher.

The 9-year-old student of PS 315 in Flatbush, Brooklyn put rat poison pellets inside the 62-year-old teacher’s water bottle on Monday with the help of the 12-year-old student, according to New York Police Department Deputy Police Commissioner Stephen Davis. The boys wanted to see what would happen to the teacher, Davis said.

The teacher drank the water and felt nauseous. She went to the doctor and is recovering Wednesday. The Department of Education issued a statement saying it was relieved to know the teacher is recovering and the incident is being investigated for appropriate action.

Another student saw the two boys put the poison and told her mother, who alerted the police leading to the arrest of the students.
