Washington, DC, United States (4E) – President Barack Obama is angry about problems over waiting time at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities and will fix it, according to White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.
“The president is madder than hell, and I’ve got the scars to prove it,” The Hill quoted McDonough as telling CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “We’re going to get to the bottom of those things, fix them and ensure that they don’t happen again.”
McDonough said additional staff has been deployed to the VA to investigate the cause of the waiting time that reportedly led to the deaths of 40 veterans at the Phoenix VA more than a month ago. He was referring to one of the president’s top advisers to aid Veterans’ Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki in the full review of the problem.
Robert Petzel, the VA’s under secretary for health, resigned on Friday due to the scandal. Some Republicans and the American Legion called for the resignation of Shinseki.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) complained that the Obama administration failed to respond in an effective manner to solve the issue and veterans cannot wait for the many months it will take to issue a report on the investigation.
Dan Dellinger, national commander of the American Legion, said Obama needs to come forward and show VA employees that they need to make a change.
