Chicago, IL, United States (4E Sports) – Jean Segura had three hits and two RBIs while Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings to carry the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 triumph over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game set Friday at Wrigley Field.
Lohse (5-1) allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts for the Brewers, who improved to 27-15 after winning five of their last six outings.
Will Smith pitched a scoreless eighth before Francisco Rodriguez closed out the win with his 17th save of the season.
Jeff Samardzija (0-4) remained winless this season after yielding four runs – two earned — on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts as the Cubs slipped to 13-27 after losing their third straight outing and six of their last seven.
The Brewers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, thanks to the Cubs’ poor defense and early struggles by Samardzija.
Jonathan Lucroy had a run-scoring single in the first inning while errors by Junior Lake and Starlin Castro contributed to another run crossing the plate.
In the second inning a passed ball by Wellington Castillo set up a two-run single by Segura for a 4-0 advantage.
The Cubs got two back in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Darwin Barney then added one in the fourth on a long ball by Junior Lake.
However, Lohse went on to retire the next 12 batters before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The Cubs extended that streak to 16 before Starlin Castro singled to lead off the ninth.
Matt Garza (2-3) will start for the Brewers in the second game of the series Saturday against Edwin Jackson (2-3).
