Rome, Italy (4E Sports) – World No. 19 Tommy Haas recorded his first Top 10 win in over a year with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over third seed Stan Wawrinka Thursday to reach the quarterfinal of the Italian Masters.
The German capitalized on 40 unforced errors from Wawrinka and broke the Australian Open champion in the eighth game of the final set to clinch the win in two hours.
Haas will look to reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal since Miami last year when he faces 12th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated sixth seed Tomas Berdych, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal defeated Mikhail Youzhny, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1, in two hours and 44 minutes to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with Andy Murray, a 7-6(1), 6-4 winner over Jurgen Melzer.
World No. 10 Milos Raonic earned his first win in three attempts against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as he edged the Frenchman, 7-6(5), 6-4. Next up for Raonic will be Jeremy Chardy, who advanced after beating Ivan Dodig, 6-3, 6-2.
Fifth seed David Ferrer downed Ernests Gulbis, 6-2, 6-3 in 71 minutes to advance against
either Novak Djokovic or Philipp Kohlschreiber.
On the women’s side, world No. 1 Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinal after beating fellow American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-1, 6-2. She will next take on Zhang Shuai, who downed Christina McHale, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Australian Open champion Li Na also booked a quarterfinal spot after beating Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 6-1. She will next face Sara Errani, who beat Petra Cetkovska, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Maria Sharapova, however, fell by the wayside as she lost to 11th seed Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 6-4. Ivanovic will face 13th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.
Agnieszka Radwanska dismissed Francesca Schiavone, 6-4, 6-1, while Jelena Jankovic knocked out 12th seed Flavia Pennetta, 6-2, 6-3, to seal their quarterfinal clash.
