Atlanta, GA, United States (4E) – Police are facing a blank wall on why an elderly man was beheaded and his wife is missing from their lakeside subdivision home in Eatonton, Georgia.
Eighty-eight-year-old Russell Dermond’s head is missing and his wife,87-year-old Shirley Dermond, could not be located because her cell phone and the couple’s valuables and car was at home, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.
Sills also said in a news conference on Thursday that there was no sign of break-in, theft and struggle inside the Dermonds’ 3,300-square-foot home in the virtually safe Great Waters community. No weapon was found inside the home and CCTV cameras in the subdivision were not working so there was no surveillance image investigators could use as lead.
The home sits beside Lake Oconee but a sonar search of the waters did not yield anything, except a lawn chair and a Christmas tree. Cadaver dogs also found no clues in the nearby woods, Sills said.
The sheriff’s office urged the public to call 706-485-8557 for any information about where Mrs. Dermond is. She is 5-foot-2, weighs 148 pounds and has gray hair and blue eyes.
Visiting friends found Mr. Dermond’s body in the garage on Tuesday. Police suspect that he was killed between Friday and Sunday. The headless victim owns fast food restaurants, including a Wendy’s and a Chick-fil-A. The couple have been married for 68 years and they attend the Lake Oconee Community Church.
