Tommy Haas opens BMW Open title defense with win

Munich, Germany (4E Sports) – World No. 16 Tommy Haas opened his title defense with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alejandro Falla at the BMW Open Thursday.

The second seed Haas converted five of his seven break points to claim victory in 74 minutes and improve to his head-to-head record against Falla to 5-1.

The 36-year-old Haas was playing his first match since a fourth-round defeat to Roger Federer in Indian Wells, having been sidelined by a right shoulder injury in recent weeks.

“I’m pretty happy with the win, obviously having been laid off for a couple of weeks and not knowing how the injury would be,” said Haas. “I’m really happy with the way I played.”

In the quarterfinal, Haas will face seventh seed Andreas Seppi, who defeated Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos 6-3, 6-4 in 87 minutes.

Meanwhile, top seed Fabio Fognini beat German wild card Dustin Brown 7-6(4), 6-2 in 65 minutes to reach the quarterfinals against Thomaz Bellucci, who downed Federico Delbonis, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Lucky loser Ricardas Berankis, who took the place of fourth seed Gael Monfils in the draw, defeated Jurgen Melzer, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(6) ,in two hours and 25 minutes.

In Portugal, Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic advanced to the quarterfinal of the $590,000 Portugal Open.

Berdych defeated Somdev Devvarman, 6-3, 6-2, while Raonic downed Pablo Cuevas, 6-3, 6-2.

Berdych will next face Leonardo Mayer, while Raonic will meet Carlos Berlocq in Friday’s quarterfinals.

In other matches, wild card Gastao Elias beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2; Victor Hanescu ousted Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; Berlocq bounced Lukasz Kubot, 6-4, 6-3; and Mayer dismissed Andrey Golubev, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

On the women’s side, Carla Suarez Navarro booked a spot in the semifinal with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Polona Hercog.

Suarez Navarro will next take on Camelia Begu, who eliminated qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Svetlana Kuznetsova upended second seed Eugenie Bouchard, 6-4, 6-1, to seal a semifinal clash with Elena Vesnina, who knocked out fourth seed Roberta Vinci, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5.
