Munich, Germany (4E Sports) – Qualifier Martin Klizan scored a huge upset at the BMW Open after knocking out third seed and 2010 titlist Mikhail Youzhny, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(2), in the second round Wednesday.
Klizan, who is currently No. 111 in the ATP Rankings, hit 10 aces to defeat the 15th ranked Youzhny in two hours and 50 minutes.
Klizan goes on to meet Denis Istomin, who defeated Marinko Matosevic, 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5 for a place in his fourth ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season.
German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff also advanced to the next round after topping Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-3, 6-3.
Struff’s next opponent will either be Austrian Jurgen Melzer or Lithuanian lucky loser Ricardas Berankis. Melzer and Berankis were tied 2-2 in the third set when play was suspended due to darkness.
In Portugal, third seed Marcel Granollers rallied past Albert Montanes, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, to secure a quarterfinal spot at the Portugal Open.
Granollers will next face qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who defeated Rui Machado, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
Also, wild card Gastao Elias also advanced after beating Filippo Volandri, 6-4, 6-3.
On the women’s side, top seed Carla Suarez Navarro and Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the quarterfinal after beating separate rivals.
Suarez Navarro blanked Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 6-0, 6-0, to arrange a showdown with Polona Hercog, who knocked out sixth seed Lucie Safarova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Bouchard, for her part, recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Yaroslava Shvedova to seal a quarterfinal clash with Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Other winners were Irina-Camelia Begu, Roberta Vinci, Russian Elena Vesnina and Timea Bacsinszky.
