Munich, Germany (4E Sports) – Two-time champion and last year’s runner-up Philipp Kohlschreiber suffered an early exit at the $590,000 BMW Open after losing to Denis Istomin, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the first round of the clay court event.
Istomin, who will next face Marinko Matosevic, saved 11 of 14 break points en route to victory in just over two hours. The win extended his record to 3-0 against Kohlschreiber, who won the tournament in 2007 and 2012.
In other matches, qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff ousted sixth seed Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, while Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci beat eighth seed Ivan Dodig, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 at MTTC.
Other winners were Andreas Seppi, Albert Ramos, Jurgen Melzer, Sergiy Stakhovsky and Martin Klizan.
In Portugal, wild card Rui Machado handed fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov an embarrassing 6-0, 6-0 defeat in just 47 minutes in the first round of the $590,000 Portugal Open.
Other seeded players joined Tursunov in the sidelines after Leonardo Mayer knocked out sixth seed Joao Sousa, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Lukasz Kubot ousted seventh seed Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-3, 7-5.
Also advancing to the next round were Carlos Berlocq, Pablo Cuevas, Victor Hanescu, Albert Montanes, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Somdev Devvarman.
On the women’s side of the event, Carla Suarez Navarro and Eugenie Bouchard advanced while Sam Stosur was eliminated.
Suarez Navarro beat Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-1, 6-2, while Bouchard defeted Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-1. Stosur was not as lucky as she was defeated by Timea Bacsinszky, 6-4, 6-0.
Other winners were No. 4 Roberta Vinci, No. 5 Kaia Kanepi, No. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 8 Elena Vesnina, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, Irina-Camelia Begu, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Polona Hercog.
