Oberhausen, Germany (4E Sports) – World heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko knocked out challenger Alex Leapai in the fifth round Sunday at König Pilsener Arena for his 16th title defense.
The WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO titleholder, Klitschko (62-3, 53 KOs), toyed with Leapai, landing 147 of 396 punches and connecting with 80 of 172 power shots.
Leapai (30-5-3, 24 KOs), who threw 69 punches and landed just 10, also took an eight count in the first round, although he claimed to have slipped.
Klitschko gave Leapai enormous amounts of respect after one of his easiest of title defenses.
He said he was wary of Leapai’s overhand right and made sure it never came close to landing.
When Leapai finally threw it in the fifth, it grazed Klitschko who quickly backpedded before throwing the knockout barrage seconds later.
“I could see tonight that he was looking for the right moment, the right shot. I swear if one of those shots landed anywhere on my head, I wouldn’t see the end.” Klitschko said.
