Montreal, QC, Canada (4E Sports) – Felipe Martins scored in the 15th minute to lift the Montreal Impact over the Philadelphia Union, 1-0 Saturday at Stade Saputo.
Impact captain Patrice Bernier intercepted Sheanon Williams’ pass at midfield and fired the ball that the onrushing Felipe collected. He then blasted it in from close range.
It was the first meeting between the teams since the Impact traded Andrew Wenger to the Union for Jack McInerney three weeks ago.
Andrew Wenger got a clear opportunity in the first half as he combined with Danny Cruz on the edge of the box before being denied by Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
Jack McInerney had an attempt in one of few Montreal attacks in the second half, but Zac MacMath tipped his shot wide.
The Union’s best chance came just minutes before the final whistle when a Vincent Noguiera cross reached Antoine Hoppenot who headed it over the bar.
The win was the Impact’s first of the season and moved them into ninth place in the Eastern Conference, leapfrogging the Chicago Fire.
Only the Fire, Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes are the remaining winless teams in MLS.
