Barcelona, Spain (4E Sports) – Spaniard Nicolas Almagro stunned world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, in the quarterfinal round of the Barcelona Open, halting a 10-match losing streak at the hands of his compatriot.
This marked the second time in two weeks that Nadal was ousted by a fellow Spaniard. He bowed to David Ferrer at the Monte Carlo Masters last week.
Almagro converted on his second match point by firing one final forehand winner past a struggling Nadal to finish the match in two hours and 47 minutes.
In the semifinal, Almagro will take on Santiago Giraldo, who advanced after 10th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber retired in the second set.
Fourth seed Kei Nishikori defeated 12th seed Marin Cilic, 6-1, 6-3, to advance against Ernests Gulbis, who dropped Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-1, 6-4.
In Romania, top seed Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the quarterfinal of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky.
The win put Dimitrov in a semifinal date with Gael Monfils, who downed Paul-Henri Mathieu, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
Lukas Rosol, for his part, defeated Gilles Simon, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, to reach the semifinal against Robin Haase, who came from behind to dismiss Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
On the women’s side, two-time defending champion Maria Sharapova downed top seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the semifinal of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Sharapova’s semifinal opponent will be Sara Errani, who was leading Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 3-0 when the latter retired due to a hand injury.
Meanwhile, former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic downed Alisa Kleybanova, 6-4, 6-3, to seal a semifinal clash with Ana Ivanovic, who survived Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
In Morocco, top seed Daniela Hantuchova secured a semifinal berth without breaking a sweat after Peng Shuai pulled out due to a thigh injury.
Hantuchova’s semifinal opponent will be Romina Oprandi, who shocked third seed Yvonne Meusburger, 6-4, 6-4.
Fifth seed Garbine Muguruza downed Shahar Peer, 6-3, 6-1, to advance against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, who held off Polona Hercog, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).
