BEA Thwarts Clearfield’s Bid for Big Softball Win

MILESBURG — A trio of big two-out hits in the fifth and sixth innings gave Bald Eagle Area a 10-5 victory over Clearfield in Mountain League girls softball action on the Milesburg Little League Field Thursday.

“I give our girls credit,“ Lady Bison coach Bob Lewis said. “We played well.

“Bald Eagle Area is good, and we had ’em on their heels in the fifth inning.”

Rachel Hoffman’s single that extended her two-season hitting streak to 12 games drove in Megan Vanderburgh and Lauren Butler to tie the score 2-2 in the fourth.

The Lady Bison then grabbed a 5-2 lead in the fifth.

After Sierra Jones singled, Taylor Luzier doubled for the go-ahead run. Vanderburgh chased Luzier home with a double, stole second and scored on error.

However, the Lady Eagles took advantage of a break in the bottom of the inning to regain the upper hand at 7-5. Logan Fischer and Makenzie Proctor made the Lady Bison pay for a two-out misplay by driving in two runs apiece with a double and a single, respectively.

Mikayla Smith put it out of reach with a three-run homer in the sixth inning as BEA (7-2) remained right behind undefeated Philipsburg-Osceola in the Mountain League race at 7-1.

“We hung with them,” Lewis said. “Basically, we were one out away. They just scored a lot of runs with two outs.”

Winning pitcher Makennah Dyke, who aided her own cause with a two-run single in the third frame, held the Lady Bison to five hits, two by Vanderburgh. Dyke struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk.

Hoffman was the losing hurler, surrendering 10 hits and six earned runs while fanning six and walking two.

Clearfield (2-7, 2-6 ML) goes back on the road Friday for a non-league game at Bradford that was postponed Wednesday.
