Boston, MA, United States (NewsBahn) – New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda was ejected from Wednesday’s game for using pine tar during his stint on the mound.

Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to complain about a blotch on the pitcher’s face and Pineda later admitted to using the substance.

The incident occurred in the second inning of an eventual 5-1 Red Sox win. The Yankees used four relievers and face the likelihood of some kind of suspension for Pineda, who tried to explain the situation.

“It was a really cold night, and in the first inning I [couldn't] feel the ball,” Pineda said. “I don’t want to like, hit anybody, so I decided to use it.”
