Sharks edge Kings in overtime for 3-0 series lead

Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Patrick Marleau’s overtime goal pushed the San Jose Sharks past the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3 Tuesday at Staples Center.

The win placed the Sharks up 3-0 in the first-round of their playoff series.

Brent Burns opened the scoring at 3:16 of the first period on a power play to put the Sharks ahead 1-0.

Jarret Stoll evened it for the Kings early in the second period before Marian Gaborik, who was unassisted, managed to beat Antti Niemi with a vicious backhand to put the Kings ahead 2-1 at 7:59 of the second.

The Sharks evened it 1:18 later when Matt Nieto scored into an open net.

Jeff Carter tipped in a tiebreaking goal for the Kings on a power play early in the third period, but Tomas Hertl converted his own rebound to make it 3-all with 10:43 left in regulation.

Marleau scored 6:20 into overtime for a Sharks victory.

Niemi stopped 28 shots for the Sharks while Jonathan Quick made 36 saves for the Kings.

Game 4 is Thursday in Los Angeles.
