Barcelona, Spain (4E Sports) – Eight-time titlist Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of the $2.55 million Barcelona Open Wednesday with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos.
“It was a positive victory for me,” said Nadal. “Obviously I didn’t play my best match, but after the defeat in Monte Carlo, the next match on court was never going to be easy.”
In the third round, Nadal will take on Ivan Dodig, who defeated 13th seed Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 6-1, 6-4.
Four-time runner-up and No. 2 seed David Ferrer was not as lucky, falling to Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-4, 6-2. Gabashvili won for the first time on his third try against Ferrer.
In other matches, Santiago Giraldo defeated Fabio Fognini, 6-0, 4-0, retired; Austrian left-hander Jurgen Melzer downed Jerzy Janowicz, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1); and Albert Montanes ousted Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Other winners were Nicolas Almagro, Fernando Verdasco and Marin Cilic.
In Romania, top seed Grigor Dimitrov moved to the second round of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy after beating Jiri Vesely, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Dimitrov will face Sergiy Stakhovsky, who defeated Carlos Berlocq, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
In other second-round play, Gilles Simon beat Victor Hanescu, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while defending champion Lukas Rosol downed Jarkko Nieminen, 6-2, 6-4.
On the women’s side, top seed Daniela Hantuchova clinched a quarterfinal berth at the Marrakech Grand Prix with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Hantuchova’s quarterfinal opponent will be Peng Shuai, who topped Maryna Zanevska, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)
Other winners were Garbine Muguruza, Shahar Peer and Polona Hercog.
In Germany, former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic defeated Sabine Lisicki, 6-1, 6-3, for a spot in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Other winners were Sara Errani, Flavia Pennetta and 2011 champion Julia Goerges.
