Boston, MA, United States (4E Sports) – Wei-Yin Chen pitched five strong frames as the Baltimore Orioles survived a furious rally by the Boston Red Sox en route to a 7-6 win on Patriots Day at Fenway Park.
Chen (3-1) allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts while Tommy Hunter earned his fifth save of the season despite giving up a homer to Mike Napoli in the ninth as the Orioles improved to 9-9.
The Orioles split the series by winning the final game of the four-game set which coincided with the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Clay Buchholz (0-2) lasted just 2 1/3 frames after allowing six runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout as the Red Sox dropped to 9-11.
Buchholz surrendered five consecutive singles to Lombardozzi, David Lough, Nick Markakis, Nelson Cruz and Davis as the Orioles took a 3-0 lead.
Jones provided the fourth run when he hit an RBI grounder while Steve Clevenger followed with an RBI double and scored on Jonathan Schoop’s single to make it 6-0.
The Red Sox got three runs off Chen in the fifth before closing in at 7-5 after solo shots by David Ross and Napoli in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Red Sox had the bases loaded in the ninth after Brock Holt’s single, Dustin Pedroia’s and an intentional walk to David Ortiz from closer Tommy Hunter.
Napoli then plated a run with a groundout before Mike Carp grounded out to first, giving Hunter his fifth save of the season.
