Dearborn, MI, United States (4E) – Ford Motors Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields is expected to be the automaker’s next chief executive officer, according to reports.

Reports said that Ford’s current CEO Alan Mulally is expected to retire before the year ends and be succeeded by Fields, who became the automaker’s COO in December 2012. The company may announce the change as early as May 1.

Rumors surfaced last September that Mulally had become the top candidate to replace Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Mulally denied the reports, saying he is committed to his current post at Ford.

In 2006, Mulally was named Ford’s chief and has been credited with reversing Ford’s fortunes and helped it emerge from near collapse at the height of the financial crisis.
