No Close Call for Bison Against Unbeaten Scarlet Dragons

HYDE — Despite showing no wins for its first six outings, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team was in every game right down to the final out.

One clutch hit, one big out or one less misplay and the Bison easily could have been undefeated or once-beaten instead of 0-5, with one suspended extra inning game yet to be completed, for their rematch with undefeated Mountain League front-runner Central Thursday at the Bison Sports Complex.

One of those losses was 2-1 on April 2 to the high-flying Scarlet Dragons, who made sure the Bison would not give them another scare by striking for four runs in the first inning and riding Mike Mock’s three-hitter to their 10th win, 10-0.

Mock, who has not given up a run in 21 innings, did walk five Bison and hit another, but the senior ace authored his third complete game shutout in four starts by bearing down to choke off every threat.

Clearfield (0-6, 0-4 ML) wound up stranding nine runners, five of them in scoring position.

“You can see why they’re undefeated and the best team in the league,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry stated. “Obviously, Mock is the best pitcher we’ve seen so far. He throws hard and has a nice curve ball. He had us off balance.”

Mock had plenty of help as the Scarlet Dragons, 7-0 and two games clear of any pursuers in the league, quickly made it an uphill battle for the Bison.

After two singles and a walk filled the sacks, Bradi Moore slammed a double to deep right center for two runs, Nick Hoenstine picked up an RBI with a groundout and another run scored on a Clearfield miscue.

“It’s tough to come back against a good pitcher like that,” Lansberry said.

And the Bison couldn’t, though they left two runners aboard in each of the first four innings.

“It’s disappointing,“ Lansberry said. “The opportunities are there. We’re just not hitting with guys on base. Too many popups.”

Central, which owns a .406 average with eight regulars at .333 or much higher, loaded the bases against southpaw Thomas Summers again in the fourth inning on a walk and two infield hits, adding two runs on a single by Ethan Lewis and another Clearfield error.

Brandon Orsich blanked the Scarlet Dragons for two frames, but they tacked on four runs, all unearned because of three Bison errors, in the seventh off Devin Jones.

Pinch-hitter Colton Kensinger’s two-run single was the key hit.

Austin Cunningham and Ethan Lewis each had two singles for Central.

Cole Kephart doubled for Clearfield.

“That’s the first game where we haven’t been in a situation where we could have won the game,” Lansberry said. “We’ve gotta keep plugging away.”

A four-game week awaits the Bison after their brief Easter break as what will be, weather-permitting, a six-game home stand.

They’ll host DuBois Monday in the lone non-league encounter, followed by Huntingdon Tuesday, Bald Eagle Area Friday and Tyrone Saturday at 11 a.m.
